ANTON HEATH: This is a true story. It’s the first day of the Haden Brothers sale, right? They draft in a lot of extra staff, so lots of new faces turn up all over the store, and they get extra tills in all departments to cope with the rush.

So the shop opens and a delivery man arrives in the china department carrying a till, and he asks where they want him to put it. The buyer of the department says she isn’t expecting another till, and the delivery man says isn’t that just typical, but the people upstairs have told him to bring it and he’s already carried it up three flights of stairs and he’s buggered if he’s going to carry it back down again.

So they keep the till and since they’ve got it they decide to use it, and all day long they’re clocking up the sales on it, taking the money and putting it in the till, and then about four o’clock in the afternoon, the delivery man comes back and says the people upstairs gave him the wrong instructions, this till ought to be in the kitchenware department. So he picks up the till full of money, walks out of the shop, puts it in the back of his van and goes home.

Of course, he didn’t work for Haden Brothers. It was his own till. He was never seen again. Brilliant. The man was a genius. You couldn’t do it these days. That delivery man was an exponent of an art that’s died.
